AD&D Encumbrance and Overland Collation
I've been running a pretty straight AD&D 1st game for the last two weeks. This is a final collection and alignment of the various scattered rules for encumbrance and movement speed across the PHB, DMG, and shit I made up. Also, some minor changes to how much stuff weighs.
ENCUMBRANCE, COMBAT MOVES, AND OVERLAND MOVES
Combat move speed, encumbrance, and overland move speed are all related. In general, one's combat move speed is determined by the weight you carry, as described in the PHB. Wearing armor makes your move speed top out at different values. Carry weight is given in coin-equivalents. A unified combat move - overland move - weight - armor table is given below. Magic armor is one category better than normal armor of its type.
12" move - 12 feet per segment - light burden overland. No or Leather armor. Less than 350 coins of weight.
9" move - 9 feet per segment - average burden overland. Padded, Chain, Banded, Articulated Plate, or Studded armor. Less than 700 coins of weight.
6" move - 6 feet per segment - heavy burden overland. Plate, Splint, Ring, or Scale armor. Less than 1050 coins of weight.
3" move - 3 feet per segment - heavy burden overland, lose two hours per day to exhaustion. Less than 1500 coins of weight.
You always benefit from your entire strength bonus - so a character with 16 strength can carry up to 700 coins of weight without encumbrance, 1050 with a 9" move, and so on.
