Boats, and how I'm running overland stuff now
OVERLAND STUFF NOW Overland movement speed is based directly on combat move speed. A character makes one overland move per day per 3" of movement. It takes two moves to cross a hex that is Open, Fields, Water, or Hills, or to move along a road or river. It takes three moves to cross a Forest or Scrub hex. It takes four moves to cross a Mountains, Heavy Forest, or Swamp hex. River crossings also consume an extra move, two for horsies, unless there's a bridge.
Horses take three moves to cross a Hills hex; wheeled vehicles take an extra move to go anywhere that's not Open, Roads, or Fields. Hexes are 12 miles, encounter checks are d10s and vary based on the day.
BOATS Boats are basically like moving overland, but of course they only go on water. All boats that can navigate rivers get an extra move per day when they're traveling downriver, and two in Heavy Rain or Heavy Snow. They lose a move going upriver in Heavy Rain. All sailboats get an extra move in Wind and two in Heavy Wind.
How much stuff can be carried in a boat is determined by the size of the boat in Boat Slots. A boat slot can either have one person and 1000 cn of personal effects or 4000 cn of cargo (including animals.) Sailboats must meet a minimum crew requirement. Rowboats must have at least 1/4 of their maximum slots rounded down full of rowers, and at least as many rowers as cargo slots and passengers combined. A rowboat with twice the minimum number of rowers (so at least 1/2 of maximum slots full and at least twice as many rowers as cargo slots and passengers) goes at the faster listed speed. Boats can be overloaded to 1.5x their capacity, but these slots can only contain cargo and passengers.
Boats have a Stability score. Each 10% (or 1 slot, whichever is less) over the boat's normal maximum loading subtracts 1 from this score. In inclement weather (Heavy Rain, Heavy Snow, or Heavy Wind,) the boat must roll a d12 under the stability score or capsize.
Casualties, obviously, cannot row or crew a boat. Characters recovering from
