Buying and Selling Magic Items in the Lake Region

Buying and selling magic items is a popular activity for many players. It's been handled on a kind of ad-hoc basis so far so I just wanted to write something about it.

SELLING Magic items are a seller's market. You can always sell them at the price listed in the DMG with or without a broker. You can't sell a magic item for more than 5x the settlement's population in GP.

BROKERS

It is useful to have a broker on hand for the purchase of magic items. The price of a broker is 1 GP per month per 20 people in the village, town, or city in which the broker is employed, rounded up to the next 500 people. The basic function of a broker is to watch the magic-item market - one magic item will occur on the market per 500 people in the settlement per month, on a random day. Its price will be the basic DMG price, plus 1d6x25%. It has a cumulative 1 in 6 chance of being bought and exiting the market per day after appearing. When present in a town with their broker, player characters may purchase those items which appear on the market while they're there.

WAITING FOR A TYPE OF ITEM

Brokers don't purchase items in the absence of their employer without special instructions. This requires a description of the type of item to look for, as well as a sum of money provided to the broker. The broker will take a 5% fee on the purchase of the requested item.

LOOKING FOR POTIONS AND SCROLLS

Potions and scrolls can be special-ordered by brokers in those towns where a cleric, druid, illusionist, or magic-user of the 7th level or higher is present. Specially ordered potions take 2d6-2 days to find a supplier + 1 day per 100 GP of value. Specially ordered scrolls take 2d6-2 days to find a supplier + 1 day per spell level. They will be priced at 3x sale value.
